Dyslexia testing in Texas

Texas campuses screen for dyslexia. A screen is a flag, not a report you can walk into a 504 or ARD with. A certified educational diagnostician in private practice can write that report on a private calendar, in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, or anywhere else in the state.

We list independent Texas evaluators who do dyslexia testing. The filter is the whole state.

School screening is not a diagnosis

Most Texas districts run a dyslexia screen and may put a child in a campus reading program. That is teaching. It is not a comprehensive evaluation. If the only paper you have is a placement letter or a progress chart, the 504 coordinator still does not have a finding.

A usable private evaluation is cognition, achievement, phonological processing, and a written identification — or a clear statement that it is not dyslexia. You can book that without the district’s permission. You cannot skip the meeting if you want the plan changed. Email the PDF before you sit down.

Who you hire in Texas

Parents here usually hire a certified educational diagnostician in private practice. That is the same credential many campuses already use for FIEs. Some families use an LSSP when attention or behavior has to sit in the same report.

Ask whether the report is written for a Texas 504 or ARD, not only a clinic chart. Ask if they will join the meeting by phone. Get that in the engagement. If the child has a Spanish-influenced language history, say so at intake so the battery does not over-call, or under-call, a reading disability.

If you already know the city, start with Dallas, Houston, Austin, or Fort Worth. The evaluator list behind those pages is the same Texas filter.

What you take to the 504 or ARD

  • A narrative a parent can read out loud at the table.
  • A direct dyslexia statement, plus any related SLD they actually tested.
  • Accommodations written so a coordinator can paste them into a 504 or IEP.
  • Instructional language that names structured literacy when the data support it, not only “more support in reading.”

Send it to the campus diagnostician or 504 coordinator before the meeting. Bring a paper copy. You are asking the committee to consider specific findings, not to “look at some testing.”

What it costs and how long it takes

Private comprehensive testing in Texas typically lands around $800–$2,500. That is a typical range, not a quote. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. A few weeks is a fair private timeline if they have an opening. School-only waitlists are often a semester. That gap is why people pay.
