Austin families often sit on a district list through a whole grading period. A certified educational diagnostician in private practice — Austin proper or down toward Wimberley — can still produce a reading evaluation you can hand to a 504 committee or an ARD.

The school can screen and can serve. What it often cannot do is finish a comprehensive evaluation before the child loses another semester. A private battery is how you walk into the next meeting with a document instead of another “we’re watching it.”
Bring the report early. An Austin ARD that sees the file the morning of the meeting will treat it as a surprise. Email the diagnostician or special-education coordinator first. Ask for the 504 or ARD in writing.
What “full” means here
You want more than an oral-reading fluency number. Cognition, academic achievement, phonological / orthographic processing, and a written call: dyslexia, or not. If the child is also unusually strong in spots, say that at intake so the evaluator does not flatten a twice-exceptional profile into “just reading.”
Hill Country and suburban campuses will still ask for classroom accommodations they can copy. Make the evaluator write those in plain English. Structured literacy is the instructional recommendation when the data support it — not “more time in the library.”
Who writes Austin reports
The usual hire is a certified educational diagnostician in private practice. Ask whether the report is aimed at a public-school ARD, a private school, or both. The audience changes the last page. Ask if they will call into the meeting. Some will. Some will not.
Cost
Private comprehensive testing in Texas typically lands around $800–$2,500. Confirm testing hours, the written report, and a parent conference. A few weeks is a reasonable private timeline if they have an opening. That gap versus a school-year wait is why people pay.
