Dysgraphia testing in Texas

Messy handwriting is a complaint. Dysgraphia is a written-expression finding you can take to a 504 or an ARD. In Texas a certified educational diagnostician writes that report — Denton, Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Pearland.

Occupational therapy is not the evaluation

An OT can work on pencil grip and fatigue. That is intervention. It is not a comprehensive educational identification. A campus “we’ll let him type” note is also not a finding. You want cognition, academic achievement, and written expression — spelling, sentence production, handwriting when it matters — plus a direct statement: dysgraphia, or not.

Keyboard access is often the right accommodation. It is not a substitute for naming the disability. The ARD and the 504 committee copy language from the report. Give them language.

Build one battery, not three visits

Dysgraphia rarely travels alone. Ask whether reading and math are in the same sitting. One report is what a Texas campus will actually file. If reading is the louder problem, start with dyslexia testing in Dallas and make sure written expression is still in the protocol.

If you do not know which skill is breaking, book the full psychoeducational evaluation and tell them writing is the referral question.

Who tests this in Texas

The usual independent evaluator is a certified educational diagnostician in private practice. You want the person who will test and write, not only the person who will do handwriting tutoring afterward. Those can be the same human. They are different jobs. Ask before you pay.

Ask whether they will join a 504 or ARD. Some will call. Some will not. That should not be a surprise the morning of the meeting.

What should be on the page

  • A parent-readable narrative, not only a writing sample scored in a table.
  • A direct statement on dysgraphia / written-expression SLD.
  • Classroom accommodations a 504 coordinator can paste: keyboarding, extra time for written work, reduced copying, speech-to-text if the data support it.
  • If you will need it later: wording a testing company can read for extra time on written sections.

Fees and timing

Private comprehensive testing in Texas is typically $800–$2,500. Confirm whether written expression is included or billed as an add-on. From first appointment to a finished report, plan on a few weeks if they have an opening.

Email the PDF and ask for a 504 or ARD to consider it. You already paid for the document. The meeting is how it becomes a plan.
