Dyslexia testing in Houston

HISD and the surrounding districts can put a child in a reading intervention and still not produce a report you can walk into a 504 or ARD with. A private educational diagnostician in Houston or Bellaire can write that report on a private calendar.

Intervention is not identification

A campus dyslexia program is teaching. It does not replace a comprehensive evaluation. If the only paper you have is a placement letter or a progress chart, a 504 coordinator still does not have a finding. The private product is cognition, achievement, phonological processing, and a written identification — or a clear statement that it is not dyslexia.

You can book that without the district’s permission. You cannot skip the meeting if you want the plan changed. Send the PDF before you sit down.

Who to call in Houston

In Houston the evaluator is almost always a certified educational diagnostician. Some also do structured-literacy intervention. Hire the person who will test and write. Tutoring can be a second contract. Ask whether Spanish-influenced language history will be handled in the intake — Houston families get burned when a battery ignores that and then over-calls, or under-calls, a reading disability.

Ask if written expression and math ride along. One Houston-area report is easier to file than three.

What the document has to do

  • A narrative a parent can read out loud at a 504 or ARD.
  • A direct dyslexia statement, plus any related SLD they actually tested.
  • Accommodations written so a coordinator can paste them.
  • If college-board timing is coming: language aimed at extra time, not just “struggles with reading.”

Ask whether they will join the meeting by phone. Get that in the engagement.

Money and calendar

Private comprehensive testing in Texas is typically $800–$2,500. Houston practices sit in that band. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. A few weeks is the private timeline if they have an opening. That is why people pay instead of waiting on a district queue.
