Dyscalculia testing in Texas

Dyscalculia is a math-specific learning disability. It is not “doesn’t try” and it is not a low STAAR score. A Texas certified educational diagnostician — or an LSSP in private practice — can put number sense, calculation, and problem-solving on paper for an ARD. Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso.

A failing math class is not an identification

Tutoring, summer school, and “try the next unit again” treat the symptom. They do not name a math SLD. A campus reteach log is useful history. It is not a finding. You want a written identification — dyscalculia / mathematics SLD, or a clear statement that the profile is something else.

Kids who are fluent readers still get stuck on place value, fact retrieval, and multi-step word problems. Do not wait for reading to “catch up” before you test math. The ARD copies language from the report. Give them math language.

What belongs in the math battery

A usable Texas dyscalculia evaluation is more than timed facts. Ask for cognition, academic achievement, and math-specific work: number sense, calculation, math fluency, and applied problem solving. If working memory or processing speed is dragging the scores, that should be in the narrative, not buried in an appendix.

Math rarely sits alone. If writing or reading is also breaking, say so at intake so those skills are in the same sitting. One file is what a Texas campus will actually open. A full picture without a single-issue guess is the psychoeducational battery. If the louder problem is written expression, start with dysgraphia testing in Texas and keep math on the protocol.

Who you hire in Texas

Parents here usually book a certified educational diagnostician in private practice. When attention, anxiety, or classroom behavior has to sit next to the math data, an LSSP in private practice is the other common author. Hire the person who will test and write. Math tutoring can come after. Those are different jobs even when one practice offers both.

Ask whether they have written for Texas ARDs and 504 committees, not only for clinics. Ask if they will join the meeting by phone. Get that answer before the deposit.

What you take to the ARD

  • A narrative a parent can read out loud — not only a calculation table.
  • A direct statement on dyscalculia or mathematics SLD (or a clear “not this”).
  • Classroom supports a 504 coordinator or ARD can paste: extra time on computation, a calculator when the data support it, reduced copying of problems, formula sheets, small-group testing.
  • Instructional language that names the skill that is actually broken, not a vague “more math help.”

Email the PDF and ask for a 504 or an ARD to consider it. You already paid for the document. The meeting is how it becomes a plan. If eligibility itself is the whole point, see 504 and IEP testing in Texas.

Fees and timing

Private comprehensive testing in Texas is typically $800–$2,500. That is a market range, not a quote. Confirm whether math is in the core battery or billed as an add-on. Confirm testing hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference.

From first appointment to a finished report, plan on a few weeks if they have an opening. You are paying for a school-facing file on a private calendar, not another year of “let’s see how algebra goes.”
