Dyslexia testing in New Mexico

New Mexico screens first graders for dyslexia risk. A failed screen is a flag for the Student Assistance Team, not a diagnosis. When APS, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, or a smaller district is still layering MLSS supports, a private educational diagnostician can write the identification you actually take to 504 or IEP.

A first-grade screen is a flag

PED requires early screening and structured-literacy training. The screener tells the SAT someone may be at risk. It does not measure cognition, does not settle eligibility, and does not write accommodations. Staying in MLSS layers without a comprehensive evaluation is how kids lose a year of reading.

You can request a special-education evaluation in writing at any layer. You can also pay for a private battery while that request is pending. Those are different calendars.

What a usable battery covers

You want cognition, academic achievement, and phonological / orthographic processing, plus a written identification — or a clear statement that the profile is not dyslexia. Structured literacy is the intervention PED talks about. It is not the test. Book the person who will test and write; tutoring can follow.

Say at intake if the child is also unusually strong. Twice-exceptional profiles get missed when the only referral question was “slow reader.” High scores plus a broken decoding system is still a report the SAT and the IEP need to see.

Who you hire in New Mexico

The person families usually hire is a PED-licensed educational diagnostician. Some families use a private neuropsych in Albuquerque when they also need a medical differential. Ask whether the report is written for a public-school IEP, for an independent school, or both.

A CALT can be the right remediator. Confirm they will produce a comprehensive evaluation if that is what you are buying. Ask if they will join SAT or IEP by phone before you pay a deposit.

The document you hand over

  • A narrative a parent can read at SAT without translating jargon.
  • A direct finding on dyslexia and any related SLD they actually tested.
  • Accommodations written so a 504 or IEP chair can paste them.
  • If college-exam extra time is coming: reviewer-ready documentation. SAT-the-exam is a different file from SAT-the-campus-team.

Fees and timing

Private comprehensive testing in New Mexico typically lands around $750–$2,000. Confirm testing hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. That is a typical range, not a quote.

Plan on a few weeks if they have an opening. Driving between Albuquerque and Las Cruces is normal; ask about hybrid intake if you are not in town.

After the report

Email it to the SAT chair or the special-education coordinator and ask them to consider the findings. You do not need district permission to test. You do need them to convene if you want the plan changed. If they already evaluated and you disagree, that is an IEE question.
