New Jersey · Learning differencesDyslexia testing in New Jersey
In New Jersey the first reading file usually comes from the Child Study Team. If that battery is thin, delayed, or already finished and still does not name the problem, a Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant in private practice can write a full evaluation you take to the IEP — Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Camden, and the rest of the state.

Browse New Jersey dyslexia evaluatorsThe Child Study Team is not the whole answer
Every New Jersey district has a Child Study Team. That team can evaluate, classify, and write an IEP. It cannot always give you a timely, reading-specific identification. Intervention-and-referral services, a 504, or “let’s wait until next year’s DRA” are not a dyslexia evaluation. If the CST already tested and you still cannot get structured literacy on the page, the next document has to come from outside.
You may book that privately without a CST signature. Changing the IEP still requires an IEP meeting. Mail or upload the report to the case manager before that date. Walking in with a sealed envelope is how the team “doesn’t have time to consider it.”
What a usable New Jersey reading evaluation includes
Ask for cognition, academic achievement, and the processing pieces that actually explain decoding and spelling — phonological awareness, rapid naming, orthographic coding — plus a written yes or no on dyslexia. A fluency screen from the reading specialist is not that battery. Neither is a tutoring intake at an Orton clinic. Hire the person who will test and write. Instruction can wait until the identification is on paper.
Say at intake if homework is easy until writing or timed work shows up. New Jersey kids get classified late when the CST file only captured “average” group scores. A 504 for extra time is a different legal path from an IEP with specialized reading. Know which meeting you are walking into.
Who parents hire here
The evaluator most families hire is a Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C). That is the private-practice title this market uses. Some psychologists also write school-facing reading reports; ask whether the report is written for a New Jersey IEP, not only a clinic chart.
Ask, before the deposit, whether they will join the IEP by phone or in person. Some will. Some bill a separate hour. Some will not appear at all. Get the answer in writing.
What you put on the IEP table
- A narrative a parent can read without a translator.
- A direct finding on dyslexia and any related SLD they actually measured.
- Classroom and testing accommodations a case manager can drop into the IEP or 504 without rewriting.
- Instructional language that names the kind of literacy work the scores support — not “more reading help.”
Fees and timing
Private comprehensive testing in New Jersey typically lands around $1,500 – $3,200. That is a typical range, not a quote from one practice. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. Hospital neuropsych is a different calendar and a different invoice; it is not required for an IEP-facing reading file.
If the LDT-C has an opening, a finished PDF in a few weeks is realistic. That is the point of paying: a document on a private clock, not another CST cycle that starts after winter break.
