Dyslexia testing in Louisiana

Bulletin 1903 tells parishes how to screen and serve students with dyslexia. A screen or an SBLC note is not a written identification. Families in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Broussard book a private educational diagnostician when they need a report the 504 or IEP can actually use.

SBLC paper is not an identification

The School Building Level Committee is where campus screening lands. That packet can start interventions. It cannot substitute for a full evaluation. Bulletin 1903 identification and a 1508 eligibility finding are different documents from a fluency probe.

If the parish is still “monitoring,” or the reading help never produced a written finding, a private battery gives you something to hand the next meeting. You do not need SBLC permission to book. You do need the school to convene if you want the plan changed.

Who writes it vs who remediates

Hire a certified educational diagnostician when you need the test and the report. A CALT or LDT may be the right person for structured-literacy intervention afterward. Those can be the same practice; they are not the same job. Ask who will sit with the child and who will sign the identification.

Ask whether dysgraphia or dyscalculia can go in the same sitting. One binder is easier for a parish 504 coordinator than three invoices.

What the report has to do

  • Cognition, academics, and phonological / orthographic processing — not only a DIBELS-style snapshot.
  • A direct yes/no (or “not dyslexia”) a parent can read at SBLC or IEP.
  • Classroom and testing accommodations written so a 504 chair can paste them.
  • If you will apply later: language College Board and ACT reviewers expect for extra time — documentation, not a claim that anyone is pre-cleared.

Get a yes or no, before the deposit, on whether they will call into the school meeting.

What it costs here

Private comprehensive testing in Louisiana typically lands around $800–$2,200. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. That is a market range, not a practice quote.

A few weeks if they have an opening. You are paying for a finished identification on a private calendar, not another year of “let’s see how fourth grade goes.”

After you have the PDF

Email it to the SBLC chair or the 504 / special-education coordinator and ask them to consider the findings. If the parish already completed a 1508 and you disagree, that is an IEE question — same kind of diagnostician, different funding letter.
