Independent Educational Evaluations in Massachusetts

When the district’s testing missed the point — or never happened on a usable timeline — Massachusetts families hire someone the school does not employ. That person is usually a Licensed Educational Psychologist or an independent school psychologist. The report goes to the Team. Concord, Newton, Worcester, Springfield, the South Shore.

We list independent Massachusetts evaluators who do IEEs — LEPs and independent school psychologists in private practice.

You are buying a second look the Team has to hear

An IEE is a complete independent evaluation, written so a public-school Team can use it. Cognition, academics, processing, and a clear yes-or-no on the eligibility question you actually asked. It is not a tutor’s progress note. It is not a hospital waitlist you hope finishes before high school.

Parent-pay is always available. You do not need the district’s blessing to book. Public expense is a different conversation: you disagree with the school’s evaluation, you say so in writing, and you ask them to fund an independent one. Keep a copy. Name the evaluation you reject.

Ask in writing. Then pick the author.

The district may send criteria — credentials, components, a cost cap. Independent LEPs who already write for Massachusetts Teams know that packet. If they refuse to fund and do not defend their own testing, that is a rights issue. DESE and an advocate go further than a directory page.

Paying yourself still happens a lot in the Boston metro. Families do it to skip the queue, to cover a question the district never ordered, or to walk into the Team with a document that names services instead of “continue to monitor.” Parent-funded does not make the findings unofficial. The Team still has to consider them.

Who Massachusetts families hire

The person families usually hire is a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP). Some families use an independent school psychologist in private practice. Ask whether the report is written for a public-school Team, for an independent school, or both. The recommendations page should match that audience.

Ask if they will join the Team by phone. Some will. Some bill extra. Some will not. Get that in the engagement, not the morning of the meeting. A clinic neuropsych can be useful. It is often slower and not always what a Team chair wants to paste.

What you walk into the Team with

  • A parent-readable narrative, not only a score printout.
  • Findings tied to classroom impact — reading, writing, math, attention — so the Team is not guessing.
  • Service and accommodation language a chair can actually use.
  • If reading is the whole fight, say so at intake. A targeted dyslexia file is described in dyslexia testing in Massachusetts.

Send the PDF to the Team chair or special-education office before the meeting. Bring paper. Say out loud that this is the independent evaluation you asked them to consider. If the child is also unusually capable and stuck, that is a different booking: gifted testing in Massachusetts.

Cost and calendar

Private comprehensive testing in Massachusetts typically lands around $2,000–$4,000. That is a market range, not a quote. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, a parent conference, and Team attendance. Hospital neuropsych is a different wait and a different bill.

A few weeks from first session to a finished PDF is a reasonable private timeline if they have an opening. School-only queues can eat a year. That gap is why people pay.
