Texas · Accommodations & placementGifted and talented IQ testing in Texas
Texas districts run their own GT identification. A group ability test in Houston, Fort Worth, or Dallas can miss a kid. A private educational diagnostician can still write an individual IQ report you can hand to the GT coordinator — or to a private school that asked for scores.
We list independent Texas evaluators who do gifted and IQ testing — educational diagnosticians in Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas, and elsewhere.
Browse Texas GT evaluatorsThe campus GT list is not an IQ report
Most Texas identification starts at school: a referral, a group screen, a matrix the campus already uses. That process can place a child. It can also stall. Private scores do not create a GT slot by themselves. They are evidence the coordinator can look at when the matrix did not tell the whole story.
Say at intake what the report is for. Public GT, a magnet or private-school file, or “this kid is bored and we cannot tell why” are three different write-ups. Ask the receiving campus what instrument and how recent before you book.
When the group test looked average
A one-morning CogAT-style screen punishes anxiety, twice-exceptional profiles, and a bad day. It also hides a split — high verbal, slower processing — that a GT teacher will actually use. An individual battery should print the indexes and say whether a composite is honest. If it is not, that sentence belongs on page one, not in a footnote.
If writing or reading is the thing that is falling apart, IQ-only is the wrong booking. Start with dyslexia testing in Dallas or a full psychoeducational evaluation in Texas.
Who you hire in Texas
Parents here book a certified educational diagnostician in private practice. That is the same credential many campuses already use for FIEs. Ask whether they write GT or IQ-only cases, which cognitive battery they use at this age, and whether they will talk to the GT teacher.
Do not shop for a promised percentile. Cutoffs belong to the district or the admissions office. The diagnostician’s job is a valid test and a report a parent can read.
Where the report goes
- Email it to the GT coordinator before you ask for a review, not across the table.
- This is usually not an ARD. Gifted identification and special education are different conversations. If you also need a 504 or IEP, say that up front so the battery is built for both.
- Private-school admissions have their own form. Do not assume the public GT packet is what they want.
Fees and calendar
Private comprehensive evaluations in Texas typically land around $800–$2,500. A narrower IQ visit can sit lower. That is a market range, not a quote. Confirm hours, the written report, and a parent conference. A few weeks is a fair private timeline if they have an opening. District nomination windows do not wait.
