Most of the demand is in Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, and DC, where school waitlists are long and private evaluators book up. An Educational Evaluator or Licensed Educational Specialist in private practice can still write a reading evaluation you take to an IEP. This directory filters that list as Virginia; it covers DC and Maryland practices too.
See independent evaluators who list dyslexia testing in this market — Educational Evaluators and Licensed Educational Specialists. Filter is Virginia; DC and Maryland listings are in the same set.

Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Montgomery County, and DC public schools can flag a reading problem. A flag is not a comprehensive evaluation. The IEP cannot write specialized literacy from a progress-monitoring graph. When the district battery is months out — or already happened and still will not name dyslexia — parents buy a private battery so the next IEP has a document.
You do not wait for a principal’s permission to schedule. You do need the IEP (or 504 team) to meet if you want services changed. Get the PDF to the case manager before the meeting. Do not spring it in the last five minutes.
What the write-up has to do
A usable evaluation here is cognition, achievement, and the processing scores that explain why a bright kid still cannot decode — plus a written identification, or a clear statement that the profile is not dyslexia. A Wilson or OG tutor’s intake is not that product. Hire the tester. Tutoring comes after the report.
Tell the evaluator if the child is high-performing until the clock starts. Twice-exceptional profiles get missed in competitive NoVA and MoCo classrooms because group scores look “fine.” Gifted-and-stuck is a different booking question; say it at intake so the battery is not only a reading confirm.
Who you actually hire
The evaluator in this area is usually an Educational Evaluator or Licensed Educational Specialist. Ask whether the report is written for a public-school IEP, an independent school, or both. Audience changes the recommendations page. DC, Maryland, and Virginia teams do not all paste the same language; the evaluator should know which table you are walking into.
Ask if they will join the IEP by phone. Some will. Some will not. Get that before the retainer.
What you carry into the IEP
- A narrative a parent can read at the table without translating jargon.
- A direct finding on dyslexia and related SLDs they actually tested.
- Accommodations written so a case manager can paste them into the IEP or 504.
- Instructional language that names structured literacy when the data support it — not “more support in ELA.”
What it costs
Private comprehensive testing in this market typically lands around $1,800 – $3,500. That is a typical range, not a quote from a named practice. Confirm hours, scoring, the written report, and a parent conference. Children’s hospital neuropsych in DC is a different wait and a different bill; it is not the only path to a school-facing reading file.
Plan on a few weeks if the evaluator has an opening. Suburban calendars fill. Book before the IEP you actually need, not after the school year is already decided.
